Naples, Italy can really boast about its wide variety of parks, ranging from the largest parks to the smallest gardens, both private and public. You would never imagine that the busy city of Naples would have so much greenery - if you know where to look!

Parks and gardens in Naples include many that were the former private gardens and parklands of the city's nobility and whether it is just a small square with surrounding trees or a larger open space, they are all peaceful places to relax.

Orto Botanico (Botanical Gardens)

These beautifully landscaped gardens were founded by Joseph Bonaparte and Prince Joachim Murat almost 200 years ago and are surrounded by giant walls. The gardens cover around 30 acres / 12 hectares and are one of the largest botanical gardens in the whole of Italy. With an enormous collection of exotic plants from all over the world, including cold hardy palms, lush tree fern glades, a large succulent collection, an important collection of established trees and shrubs, large cacti and many stunning flowering plants, the gardens are well worth a visit.

Gardens of Augustus

A few minutes away from the Piazza Umberto are the grand Gardens of Augustus, which were actually founded by the famous Roman emperor, Julius Caesar. The beautiful gardens feature an enormous collection of mature trees, shrubs and many other specimen plants, which all thrive in the fertile soil. With terraces offering one of the most spectacular views in the whole of Italy, it is easy to see why Caesar enjoyed these gardens so much.

Villa Comunale

This old and large city park includes many established trees, fountains, walkways and an aquarium. The gardens run for almost a mile along the Bay of Naples and there are some great views.

Near to Citara are the Gardens of Poseidon, which are a complex of swimming pools set in a formal Mediterranean garden. This is more of a glamorous outdoor shopping mall than a botanical garden rich in flora, but nevertheless is worth visiting.
